Questions to ask outerwear manufacturers
Identity and approach
NovaSupplier is infrastructure for direct relationships between independent clothing brands and Portuguese manufacturers.
Use these questions to protect direct brand-factory relationship ownership from the first conversation.
Where brands usually get this wrong
- Relying on intermediaries instead of opening direct conversations with factories.
- Comparing only quoted unit price without validating MOQ per style and timeline realism.
- Treating Portugal sourcing as generic supplier browsing instead of relationship building.
How to use this guide
- Use this guide to structure direct conversations with Portuguese manufacturers.
- Ask identical questions to each shortlisted factory and compare answers line by line.
- Lock ownership of key decisions in writing before moving from sample to bulk.
MOQ and materials
What is your minimum order quantity per style and per colour?
Outerwear MOQs often range from 100–500 pieces per style. Listen for per-style minimums; materials (e.g. down, membrane) can push minimums higher.
Do you source shell fabrics, lining, and insulation?
Material sourcing drives lead time and MOQ. Ask what they source in-house and whether you can supply your own. Down and technical membranes often have longer lead times.
Can you work with technical membranes (e.g. waterproof, breathable)?
Technical outerwear requires specific construction and often laminated fabrics. Ask what they have experience with and at what MOQ.
Do you offer development or sample runs before bulk?
Sample runs (e.g. 20–50 pieces) help lock fit and construction. Ask minimum for sampling and whether the same factory does bulk.
Lead times and construction
What is your typical lead time from order confirmation to delivery?
Outerwear often runs 12–20 weeks. Get a breakdown: materials, cut, make (lining, quilting, etc.), trim, pack. Material lead times can add 4–8 weeks.
What construction do you do in-house (e.g. quilting, taping, zips)?
Listen for quilting, seam taping, and hardware installation. Complex outerwear may require specialist sub-suppliers; ask who does what.
How do you handle fit and pattern development?
Outerwear fit is critical. Ask how many fit samples they include and whether they do pattern and grade in-house.
Quality and compliance
What quality checks do you do (e.g. waterproofing, measurements)?
Listen for waterproof testing, measurement reports, and stitch quality. Ask if they test to any standards (e.g. water column).
Do you have experience with down or synthetic insulation?
Down and synthetic fill have different handling and compliance requirements. Ask what they have experience with and what certifications they can support.
What is your policy on seconds or off-spec goods?
Clarify how they handle pieces that don’t meet spec (e.g. waterproof failure, fit) and who bears the cost.
